I have looked at a pop magazine called 'Smash Hits' to find out what features it uses for its front cover and how this design is tailored to meet its target audience. Front covers need to be well thought out as if it doesn't appeal to the target audience, then they won't buy the magazine. They have used San serif font in bright colours, this attracts its target audience of children as it looks fun and exciting and something they would want to look at. The use of large images of pop stars works well for this magazine as it immediately informs the audience of what the magazine is about. They haven't chosen a random pop star here, they have made sure that they use the latest band that everyone wants to know about so people are more inclined to buy the magazine. They also use informal language as this is more appropriate for the target audience. For example, 'McFly swap juicy secrets'. The adjective 'juicy', creates a sense of thirst which makes the reader have a craving to find out what the secrets are, this is a clever way of making the reader want to buy the magazine to find out more.

This front cover is from a children's pop magazine called 'Top of the pops'. The title for the magazine is 'Top of the pops' which is always in the same font so that readers can easily spot it. They also use a logo on their front cover which is the spirally circles this is so that when people see it they immediately know who it is and where it comes from. It uses a lot of the colour pink, this attracts girls as it is known to be a 'girly' colour. The colour of the text fits in with the colour of the images for example the pink text and the pink T-shirt, this makes it more easy on the eye and not too clashy. The colours for the text are kept to a maximum of 5 colours, this is so it looks balanced. They have also used San serif font, this is because it is a less formal approach. They have a bar code in the bottom right corner so that when the magazine is to be sold, the price can be scanned through to the till. They also have the date and price just above the bar code in a highlighted text box. This is so that it stands out and is clear to the reader. The main image is of two famous actors, this stands out and works to engage the reader. They have chosen both a male and a female so it can appeal to all genders. It is a posed shot capturing their facial expressions as smiling. This creates a positive tone which makes the magazine look fun and exciting to read. This front cover is packed with different images of celebrities worldwide and tries to sum up what is inside the magazine. The front cover uses lots of quotes from inside the magazine to attract the audiences interest.

This is a contents page from 'Mizz' magazine. The contents are split into catagories which are clearly divided into different colour fonts. They have written page numbers in a coloured font and next to them is written what each page features, but this is in standard text. The page background colour is simple and white, this makes the text stand out and makes it easy to read. They have picked out some images from within the magazine which they think might attract the reader and next to it written what page number it is from. I think this works really well as it make the page look more interesting and adds colour.

This double page spread is from 'Top of the pops' magazine. The language used for this is informal and appeals to young children. It is easy to read and uses uncomplicated words. The tone is very fun and funky. They have used the words 'Dolls Drama' as a subheading. This alliteration stands out and makes a statement. It compliments the images as they are of the pussycat dolls in action. They have used nine images which dominate the page. They have used speech bubbles on the images to make it more fun to read. The page uses a lot of the colour pink which appeals to the female audience. The page suggests 'girl power' as it is dominated by females. They have an image of two attractive men which will also appeal to the female audience. The text used is kept to a minimum and not too overloaded as this may put young people off reading it. The captions are in bold text and a different colour to the rest of the text, this is so that it is seperated and stands out. The images give off a positive tone as they are all of people looking happy and smiling.
